Patch Birding – 10/v/14

I headed down to Tutt head early this afternoon, and carried out a seawatch from 12:30 until 2:30. Not a great deal was seen, with only a few Kittiwake, Gannet and Fulmar on show. Six Manx Shearwater were seen (a new patch bird for me) and the day was saved by a distant Storm-Petrel! My first on the patch and in Wales! A Swift was also seen along with a Whimbrel (another patch first) and a few other bits and pieces like Cormorant and Raven.

As I headed home, I noticed a large flock of waders on the beach, and quickly realised they were a flock of 92 Whimbrel.

(Apologies for the poor quality phone-scoped shots).

Also present were a group of 18 Dunlin, 3 Sanderling in summer plumage (another patch tick for me), 3 Bar-Tailed Godwit, 9 Ringed Plover and more than 300 Oystercatcher.
