After a quiet day, a trip up Cairngorm was in order. Heading up windy ridge (to the east of the main track), very little was seen other than a couple of Meadow Pipits. The disappointment continued at the Ptarmigan restaurant, as only a few Wheatear were seen.
Heading on towards the summit, no Dotterels were seen at the usual place, and it really was looking like it would be a very disappointing visit. However, around the next crag a few shapes were skulking around in the long grass. Ptarmigan!
When we reached the summit, a scruffy female Snow Bunting was hopping around at close range, allowing decent views.
On the way back to the Ptarmigan Restaurant, another six adult Ptarmigans were seen distantly. Then, a remarkable flock of 22 were seen together above the traverse, taking the total for the day to 34 birds. Below them on the other side of the path was a Mountain Hare, though it was a bit distant!
To finish things off, a couple of juvenile Ring Ouzel were heard and then seen flying across to some scree behind the visitor centre.
