I payed a brief visit to the Newport Wetlands earlier today, mainly to carry out some survey work, but also with the aim of fitting in some birding. The highlights were:
- A single Grasshopper Warbler which was flushed from a bramble patch and perched briefly in a tree at close range giving excellent but brief views.
- Good numbers of passage waders amongst the usual species at Goldcliff Lagoons including; a juvenile Wood Sandpiper, three juvenile Curlew Sandpiper, a male Ruff, three Greenshank, seven Knot and approximately 250 Black-Tailed Godwits.
- A Yellow Wagtail also flew low over the platform, calling.
